While Ambookgeek's relaxing at a 5-star hotel on Maui, I'm chillin out in L.A. wondering how can I get one of those plush gigs :) hee hee. But seriously, I was hanging out with my friend, Jen B., and we were talking about how we probably should have gotten one of those "cash gigs" as she called them. Yes, I needed another skill, like I don't know, being an awesome hairstylist or wax technician or something like that. But it takes years to be amazing and excel at those jobs so I will stick to being a librarian. Though, i still would like to be a massage therapist at some point. Therapeutic people not exotic.

Anyway, last night, I started reading Daniel Pink's "A Whole New Mind" and I could not sleep afterwards. I know, it's not like it's a horror story or anything, it's about how the world is changing to right-brained thinking versus left-brained thinking. Yeah! That would really keep a girl up at night. Oy! Anyway, sufficed to say, I'm kind of a little off today. But I'm still going for a run even though I feel like I should put on a sweater. Yeah! from 95 degrees to a cool 50. Not gonna complain the coolness is welcomed.

Dang, when did I lose my people skills?

Do you ever have those moments where you are just engulfed in the task or activity that you just tune people out? And then when people interrupt you, you all of sudden lose all sense of politeness or just lose your ability to deal with people? No? Ok, I guess it's just me! hee hee

Well, that happened today when I went on my morning run. The last couple of weeks, during the weekdays, I spend a lot of time on my own, and I think, I just got used to not dealing with people I know. Plus, living in LA, you do not really run into people and when you do, I think, it is always a little weird. Plus, it's even more weird when you run into people while you are attempting to workout. AWKWARD!

So, I'm running along and this was the level part, so I am getting into a zone and then I hear, "Hey!" I totally was jolted out of my focus and honestly, I lost all power of speech because (1) I was breathing heavily and (2) I had not yet spoken to a human aside from the occasional "hello." I looked up, and here is the thing with work people, you never recognize them outside the work environment unless you are actually friends with them. So, I'm giving them the shifty eye. I cannot help it, I am suspicious of people. Then I realize "Oh, co-workers!" I could only think about asking them about how their bike ride was. I had no idea what to say really. I think, I just looked dumbstruck. Then one of them asked, "oh how are you doing?"
You know what my answer was, "oh no. I'm out of my zone!" Hello! How effing rude am I? I mean, I could've been polite but honestly, I thought it was going to be one of those ride by/run by exchanges like "oh hey. have a good ride/run." But no...there was an actually conversation that was taking place and I had not idea how to deal with it! I mean, I'm a bit of a recluse at work anyway so that probably sealed the deal with me just being effing weird.

GAH!

Britain Seeking Female Spies

Britain's secret spy agency, home to the very white and very male 007, is hunting for women and minorities to tackle global terrorism. More than 20,000 people have applied since MI6 began its open recruiting campaign about a year ago, in a drive that has all but replaced the famous shoulder tap used to recruit author Graham Greene and others in World War II.

MI6's Web site encourages mothers to apply and assures women they won't be used as "honey pots," or seductresses. Disabled applicants are welcome. And a special search is directed at minorities who speak Mandarin, Arabic, Persian and the Afghan languages of Dari and Pashto.

Could the future James Bond be a woman or a dark-skinned Urdu speaker?

14 years? Really? Supergrass at the Avalon

Yesterday, I went with "Fred" to see Supergrass at the Avalon. It was an amazing and hilarious fun time. I have not seen him in years. We actually try to go to either Supergrass or Paul Weller shows together. I met him in college. He was a scooter kid. I was a scooter kid. We both had radio shows - ska mainly. He's an amazing cook. I'm an amazing eater :) I realized that no matter how much time has passed, we always end up laughing, reminiscing and start off where we left off.

Anyway, it ended up being a bit of an ordeal waiting in line to get tickets. I really am not a fan of the Avalon so it didn't help that (1) they didn't open the box office until 7:00 when they post on their site that they open an hour before the doors open, which is at 7:00! (2) the bouncer security guy was super loud and kept changing things - stand here, no here, make that here, gah. Make up your mind all ready! And he kept moving those metal barrier crowd control things and the whole time he has his shirt buttoned up and then all of a sudden he comes around the corner with some orange cones with his shirt unbuttoned! Why? Seriously, unneccessary. Fred and I had fun cracking up at that.

After that whole situation, we walked up the street for Peruvian food. Yum. Chan wrote a whole post about Peru & China. Fred described it as "Latin Chinese Food." I still don't understand the french fries thing so if you know, tell me!

The show was amazing! They played a lot of songs from the new album, which I need to pick up and a lot of old songs. Speaking of old - yeah 14 years! Do you believe they have been around that long? Do you believe I've been listening to them that long?!? Yeah! I know!

In line, Fred leaned over and commented, "look at all the gray hairs." LOL! Then we noticed the people bringing their kids to the show. Their kids! Yeah! All Ages! We were like, "oh crap. We are old!" LOL! After dinner, we headed back and decided to head towards the floor. It's always fun on the floor except I stood on the steps because people are tall and I wanted to see. Anyway, Supergrass came out and we were all screaming but as the show continued we started noticing a few things.

(1) this crowd is not rockin out and jumping up and down like they used to - we have bad knees people! There were mainly a bunch of bobbin' heads. Then maybe a couple of people (myself included) would start jumping but it never lasted as long as it did before. Ok, I could never sustain that much jumping anyway but I know some of those people in the audience did.

(2) this crowd also does not drink as much as they used to - people have kids or whatever and you know, recovery times takes longer

(3) the band, though fabulous, is also older. Hello, Gaz was drinking water. What happened to his bottle of beer? And Mick was drinking from a bottle of wine. Wine?!? Classy :) They are seriously more professional from when I saw them at the Cactus Club in San Jose (which is not even listed on the Cactus Club website - that should tell you something)

(4) also people were leaving early and the show ended at the decent hour of 10:30p.m. Early! Before those people would stay out all night!

At one point, Fred leans over and goes, "Supergrass sponsored by AARP." LMAO! O.M.G. I was dying. Then Gaz made a comment about VH1. VH1 - that was your parents music video channel. And now, it's our music video channel (do they even show videos?)

Anyway, we had fun making fun of ourselves at the geriatrics show. So funny. Then, of course, I headed home because I was tired and you know, I'm old! HA HA HA!

Saturday: the day for chilling out

Bad day

I am just going to start off by saying I had a totally amazingly fun day today however, a lot of other people did not seem to be having a very good Saturday.

I started out with a super fun hike and Jinkies breakfast with MelleMusic and then hit the Santa Monica Farmers' Market for some fresh veggies and fruit. If you go next week, look for the guy who sells the different variety of melons, they are delicious! And the peaches guy. You'll know the peaches guy because they have a mad crazy line for the peaches...

Anyway, we were leaving and as we were pulling out of the parking garage, we were inches before the car leaving in the next lane. He slams his breaks, throws up his arms and shouts, "Go! Already! Geez!" I was thinking, "WTF?" so I yell, "Don't be so angry! Chill out!" and then we pull out. It was only 10:30 am and he was already super angry. Seriously, that's just lame! Ok, I should probably shut up too because that recent being followed on the freeway crap (ok, I don't know if I posted that..that's a whole other post). So, he's stuck behind us for a while before he makes a right to another street. I still have my window open and I'm feeling a little worried that he might be a super big a-hole. I'm sitting back, waiting for some thing...

He was blasting COLDPLAY! COLDPLAY!!! Do you believe that?

Melle & I busted up laughing! Seriously, so angry and then Coldplay?!? And not new rockin' Coldplay. It was Sleepy Time Tea Coldplay! Hilarious!

Then I was waiting in a line for Supergrass tickets and some of the people were so pissy and judgmental. These two girls walked past and ok, one wanted to be Paris Hilton but seriously, whatever. Who the hell cares? But this girl totally says loud enough for them to hear, "Hello Sluts." And her friends just laugh along. I was like, "geez, really, you're like 40 and you're doing that shit." I mean, who knows what that girl's about. But seriously if you can rock those clothes, then go right ahead and do it. Then someone else was saying how no one in line has ever heard of Supergrass (more on them tomorrow). Gah! People are in their 30s maybe 40s and still thinking that crap. Get over it people! It's not THAT serious.

So seriously...it's the weekend. Let's all just chill out and not care about what other people are thinking or doing and just deal with our own crap. Deep breathe in. Deep breathe out. Repeat!

Feeling a little dense - but that's ok.

Today, I walked around downtown and went to MOCA. I did not realize that it was Thursday - Art Walk night so I went to see some exhibits.

Reflections

I went to see the Marlene Dumas exhibit and I realized that I am a bit of a prude. There were a couple of pieces I liked like the series "Black Drawings" and her collages, like "3 Women and I" but most of the pieces were a little too dark for me. She has one piece called "Don't Talk To Strangers" that I really liked which was another collage which looked like she took pages from a guestbook and tore it up and took the interesting bits to make this work. However, back to the dark side, there were pieces that were based on the Abu Ghraib photos and some pieces that were pretty pornographic. Hence, my prude statement. I was not disturbed by them, I just did not care for them.

Marlene Dumas

Most of the pieces I liked were from the permanent collection. They have fabulous pieces like that giant Barbara Krueger "It's a Small World, But not if You Have To Clean It," which is appropriate for the time we are living in - brownouts, rolling blackouts, gas shortage, water shortage, etc. etc. etc.

However, there were moments where I just did not get what was going on. There was one piece that was basically Malevich's "Black Square" except bigger and not in the top corner of a room. I don't know. I did not get it. Then I went to Redcat to check out Haegue Yang's Asymmetric Quality. I did not understand this one either. It was a series of blinds, red lights, lights and fans. I read the interview with Yang but I still had no idea what was supposed to be happening or what I was supposed to be feeling. Then there was a series of loud LOUD drumming that started playing and I still did not get it! Maybe I'm not supposed to get it. I just have no clue!

Now, I'm home and freaking out about the movie, Twilight. You should check out Stephanie Meyer's series. It is hit and miss but that should not stop you from reading it. The kids LOVE it! Especially if you love vampires and werewolves, you'll probably like this series.

This is why I'm excited! Peter Facinelli is going to play Carlisle! Am I the only person who actually watched and enjoyed "Fastlane"? I think he would make a great Carlisle. Also, the kid who played Cedric is playing Edward! Edward! It's perfect. I am not sure who's side I'm on, Edward or Jacob's. Ok, I know, I'm on team Edward! He's a vampire! I cannot help it! Anyway, that's about it! I can't wait for December!

What day is it? Love Day!

I also have no idea what day it is because I'm still on vacation. :)

I think, I'll just start making up the days of the week and that will be the theme. I should go walk around and take pictures for the theme of the day. I am not sure where I will be heading out to today because every time I have gone out things have been closed. :( The other day I took the Metro to Silverlake and all the stores close at 7. Then yesterday I went to MOCA and it was closed! But on the website it said it was closed Mondays! They seriously need to get on that. Hum, I wonder if I can find some love at Target. Maybe I should pick a spot and see what I can see?

I don't know. I'm kind of lazy.
