I was never a fan of the mega love songs.. yknow those songs. The Top 40 super ballads...
My taste for songs of love have always skewed to lesser known... and from the sound of most of them - a thread of sadness is usually stitched in the melodies. This doesn't mean I have a sad outlook on love and relationships.... I just prefer lyrics that make me think... or even instrumentals that move me.. or remind me of emotions I've felt... both good and bad.
This is a great one from Alexi Murdoch.
Enjoy.
I am kinda stuck on this woman...
This is my favorite song off her What a Beautiful Place album. I will write more on Ms Howe but that will take forever - she stirs up some warmth and happiness... sadness too.
But she is right up my alley of classic folk faves... you just know when a singer's voice just feels like home. And hers does.
(thanks, Jason!)

Becky Stark, lead singer of Lavender Diamond, is so endearing in person that one cannot help but love her songs. She is hilarious. I am just absorbing their full album today. This one in particular makes me happy. Jason, Anna and I saw them live yesterday at Amoeba records in Hollywood. For a full report, please read Scooter Kitty's post and to view pictures of the band (& we also saw Dntel) - Lavender Diamond + Dntel photo set.
Lavender Diamond is a local L.A. band signed under Matador Records. (I heart you, Matador. You can do no wrong)

The girls and I walked the 6-mile stretch of Santa Monica's bike path this morning. As expected I had my little iPod shuffle clipped nicely on my white hoodie through our walk. This song by the Stars came on and I found myself repeating it for at least five times during our workout. It's nice and mildly ambient... the lyrics are quite sad, but the composition is really beautiful. The strings in the beginning just hooked me right in.
Stars is fast becoming my favorite band out of Canada.
I woke up about an hour ago and I've been having trouble falling back to sleep...
I was browsing through my iTunes in search of something a bit dreamy... and I came across this. Exactly a year ago - this was my favorite song. I love the ethereal quality of the ladies of Azure Ray. (I heart all things Saddle Creek)
I think I've found it. A perfect and beautiful sleep remedy... and tomorrow (rather, later) on the bus ride to work - I can guarantee that I will be playing this on my iPod, then iTunes @ work.

I am leaving town today for a week. I am going to Las Vegas for several trade shows that the company I work for is participating in. So.. I probably will not be voxing it very much while I am away...
I wanted to wish everyone a wonderful week... and happy valentine's day! Whether you are coupled or single - Valentine's Day is not only exclusive to lovers, I believe... tell someone you care about that you adore them. Actually you shouldn't even wait until V-day to do that. Just do it. It feels great!
Yay for love.
